I suggest to use Live CD/DVD/USB to test your hardware if it is supported by Linux or not before installing it. To test the display card, wireless card, ethernet card and function keys (for laptops only) to see if they are working properly or not.
Ubuntu or Ubuntu Samiux Remix (USR) is suggested as they are very user-friendly. Ubuntu Samiux Remix is designed to run on the DVD-ROM or USB dongle. There is some demo videos at the USR site.
I do not recommend to dual boot Linux and Windows system as it requires more technical skill to do so. It is very danger for newbies as your Windows may be destroyed or else. Use another hard drive on a mobile rack is ideal for newbies.
There are basically three main package formats for Linux, that is deb, rpm and tar.gz. RedHat Enterprise Linux, Novell SuSE, CentOS and fedora are packaged in rpm format. Debian, Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu and Eubuntu are in deb format. Some others are packaged in tar.gz format. In my opinion, deb format is much user-friendly. When you make up your mind which package format suits for you, you can choose one of that distributions to try and buy such books. There are many valuable information about Linux in the internet. Google is your best friend.
Finally, I will suggest Ubuntu and Ubuntu Samiux Remix. |
