I had bad experience in dead chicken hard disk before, 4x1T in Raid 5 and dead all of them after 3 months of use, one by one each in 1-2 separate week. I am lucky it is raid 5 and rebuild to make all back. After the replacement of those 'repaired' harddisk, it is survive for 2yrs+ without any issue
It means the hard disk should be
1) instant dead when you first bought it within a week use
2) dead after a prolong use within 3-6 months
if they have deficit, then it will be stable and last for long
it seems manufacturing defects is the main problem to cause hard disk dead within 6 month, and after that it is quiet stable always.
So, buy harddisk and run for 3months with not so important data, if it is still work, then make it serve the most important storage.
I think 2 year is enough to discover manufacturing deficits.
Hope this 2 cent help, and raidz2 or raid 6 is a must for large TB hard disk, as rebuild 3TB take quite long time. You loss 3TB hard disk AV is also no fun.
