Yes, once you activate your WhatsApp account in another phone, you cannot open the WhatsApp to read the chat history in the original phone. I have came across this several times when I and my wife changed our phones from 920/830 to 950XL/950 before.
The best way I could do was:
1. In the old phone, open WhatsApp and backup chat history within the App.
2. Turn off the old phone, take out the SIM and put into the new phone.
3. Turn on the new phone, open WhatsApp, then activate your account (pass code verification required) and restore from backup.
Note:
1. I can restore all my contacts and chat history when I migrated from 920 to 950.
2. However, there was problem with my wife's case when she migrated from 830 to 950XL - All contacts were restored; most but not all chat histories were restored. I could not even figure out why some chats were restored in full but some were restored with only the group but not the contents. I have repeated the steps several times but could not make it success.
3. In both cases, I could still re-activate the WhatsApp in the old phones again by putting back the SIM card and going through the verification once. |
