intel didn't care about desktop users, whatever branded as i7 will sell
thus from 45 to 14nm die shrink were directly translated into higher yield and therefore profit

but Xeon's a different story, the core count must be doubled every 3-4 years to justify server replacement. as the 10nm plan goes south and EPYC is pressing, making HCC/ XCC out of existing node hurts the yield and now they have shortage. moving to smaller nodes is their only hope to make Xeon server stay relevant |
