ChaCha hing,
Regarding the installation of ASIO on #99, I cannot find the USB DAC you chose.
I have downloaded the ASIO4all & the ASIO output support dll
I installed ASIO4all and do nothing inside.
72 ...

I dun understand. Have you bought soundrigor already?  I thought you are still thinking about it? USB DAC option only appears if you have connected the eeepc with an external DAC by USB.

Thank you so much for your kind advice, I have to apologize that I am not actually that serious on 0404.  I need to get myself at least a basic set of hifi and speaker before I really look into this  ...

the 0404 PCI version is much cheaper than the USB one

anyway audio staff will cost you a lot (too much?) when you start to be a mad player....

so you mean I will see something like this

when I have DAC connected?
If so, still, I am a bit confused by the left & right.  I can select both ...

Yes, this screen appears only after you connected your USB DAC.
I think the step should be like this
1. Start eeepc
2. When startup finishes, plug in the USB DAC (remember the USB cable!)
3. Then the right bottom corner will show sth like new devces and finally 'usb audio device' found (sth like that).
4. At this point you go to ASIO4all first. Disable Realtek. Enable USB DAC. No other tweaks need to done there (the only one you may have to do is to unchecked the forced sampling box - the one '44.1 <---> 48')
5. Close ASIO4ALL. Re-open it again. Close it again. This is to sure your setting is stable. The latter 2 steps might not needed, I just do that though.
6. Open foobar. Use your method to add USB DAC by clicking ASIO under Output (preference). You'll now only see USB DAC (left and right) and not the Realtek (since you disable it by ASIO4ALL program).
7. Then go to Ouput main interface. You can now see two more options under Output Device. One is DS: USB DAC. One is ASIO4ALL. Choose the latter. I have yet to test the difference between them.

Hope it answer your questions! And hope my reply is not too late ...

I think comparing iriver mp3 with eeepc FLAC still makes sense since you're comparing the best performance of each gear under normal use. if iriver can only play mp3 files (can it play other formats?).

Forgot to say, the left and right are all right, just meaning that you have both left and right and channel and you can test the 'mapping'. As long as you can see them, it's ok. Worst come to worst, the left is mapped to the right and the right to the left.
No harm to the sound quality.
