Windows Phone ~ So bad

My Lumia 640, I thought of using it until end of 2017. I have not updated it to Windows 10 as the check update showed it was up to date.

But in 1 Jan 2018, I find that my whatsapp was expired. It was completely closed and I cannot open it to read any of the past messages! It is like a disaster to me.

Then, I know that whatsapp is no longer supported in Windows 8. So, I try to update it to Windows 10. I googled it and find that I need to download Updated Advisor app first. I am ok to download it and then I check Update. Yes, it finds Windows 10 and I press download. But after downloading up to 87%, it shows the following error:  "There was a temporary issue with a server or your Internet connection during the update.(801881d0)"

It is ridiculous to have such error. I need to google it and find that it is my wifi problem. How come my wifi has problem? I have checked my wifi to be OK. I tried it for at least 10 times but still the same (after looking for if there is enough storage, etc, reboot, etc. What I have not yet done is hard reset it ~ but it defeats my purpose of rescuing my whatsapp).

Thus, the cost of using Windows 8 phone is this: suddenly you will find that your whatsapp is closed and you cannot check any of your old whatsapp message. And you also cannot update your Windows 8 phone to Windows 10 because Microsoft does not give you informative messages to solve the problem ~ or I have not spent enough time to google for the solution.

Actually, I know in advance, when I use my Lumia 640 a year before, that I cannot transfer Whatsapp between Windows phone and Android phone. But I expected that I can at least see old Whatsapp messages in my Windows phone. Now I cannot open any of the old whatsapp messages.

I now have an Android phone and after installing Whatsapp, it is in completely "clean" situation. It is so pity.

----

Other important issues that I tolerate in using Windows phone: there is no Google Map app, which is very important for me, for looking up place. Some say there are Windows's map alternatives, but my experience is that they are so poor in usage. YES, some will say there are good apps, but I just have no more time to test for those "good" apps. I can tolerate to use my web browser for youtube or alternative youtube app. I can also tolerate no gmail and use the poor quality third party email app. But I cannot tolerate not having Google Map.

---

For me Windows phone, say 640, only good points are on the battery and quite good camera. But I want to say that the system is completely bad. And now I have to spend time looking for how to upgrade it to Windows 10, in order to rescue my whatsapp. This is completely nonsense and does not make any sense of using it.

I was tempted by Lumia 950 due to its very good camera. But I think I should not deal with it, even at zero price, due to the above time wasting problem.

My Lumia 640 will go to trash soon.

You may try to use Windows 8.1 and whatsapp beta.

    Before upgrade to win10

Have you back up whatsapp folder and data separately?

950 has native Windows 10 os, and they will not make another newer OS so it's very unlikely for you to encounter such a problem another time.  Btw i have no problem updating my Lumia 520's whatsapp :/ Still using Windows 8 denim, actually no need to update it to Windows 10, unless your only issue concerned is that I can't run Windows 10. But hey, running a newer OS on an old rig won't bring you anywhere....

But if it's gonna haunt you that much then just give up windows phone already.... it has no future after all.

Anyway, happy new year and cheers mate!

S.

My 625 still can use whatsapp and no problem at all.
My phone can also receive gmail via the email app, I dun know why you cannot.
Actually you can sell your phone instead of putting it into trash.

My pass experience on 640 may help you .

I used to encounter "The app is expired" message on Whatsapp.  The case is the Whatsapp was not actually expired but the Windows Phone system just didn't allow me to use it.  I was sure that the System date/time were correct on the 640.

I need to uninstall the Whatsapp and re-install it again to make it work again.  But it will soon show the same "the app is expired" on next power on.  It turned out to be the message appeared whenever I removed the SIM card from 640 and used Wifi only.  The problem did not appear once I insert the SIM card.  So, I guest there is hidden bug on the Wifi connection.

You may test it again by disabling the Wifi and use mobile data only to launch Whatsapp

Thanks all your replies. After reading all of your replies last night that say whatsapp can still works in Windows 8 phone, I tried whatsapp again. Then it asks me for phone no. verification (a little history: I have removed the sim card for more than 1 week and use wifi to connect to the wifi hotspot of my new Oneplus 5t so as to use the whatsapp on my Lumia 640). After verifying the phone number, I can use whatsapp again. So my problem is solved ~ i.e. whatsapp still works in Windows 8 phone and I can read my old messages.  I also successfully backup my whatsapp data to my OneDrive. Thus, my problem is solved now.

Yes, my problem is due to missing SIM card, just like wct said. The reason why I have such large reaction is that I have read somewhere last week that whatsapp is no longer supported in Windows 8 phone starting from 1 Jan 2018 and I suspect that it is because of this that I cannot open the whatsapp (and incidentally whatsapp really showed me "expired" message).

Thanks for all your information. My next question is how to transfer my backup whatsapp to my Oneplus 5t. My previous info is that I cannot. But now, at least I have my images backup to OneDrive and it is good enough to you.

Sorry for making the trouble to you all. Yes, putting the phone to trash is an exaggeration. I will keep it as backup phone. :)

Hi simonkwok2, I want to ask: after putting my sim card to Oneplus phone and activate the whatsapp via phone verification in OnePlus, is it that I can not open the whatsapp and read whatsapp messages in my old Windows 640 phone (since whatsapp knows that my phone number is now in the OnePlus phone)? Thank you.
