But only when the road is clear and it's safe to do so without other drivers nearby

A redline a day, keeps the carbon buildups away.  

I do that with a 10 year old M54B25 with 160k km... doesn't eat a drop of engine oil and runs silky smooth.

As long as you play with the car once everything is up to operating temps, it's not gonna do too much harm.
